Pangrams: EXPOUND and EXPOUNDED
Today’s NYT Spelling Bee was all about precision, reasoning, and a little patience. The hive had N at its center, surrounded by D, U, E, X, P, O, which gave off a sophisticated vibe — a small, sharp set of letters that hinted at words with depth and meaning.
After exploring a few combinations, I discovered that today’s pangrams, EXPOUND and EXPOUNDED, perfectly embodied the spirit of explanation and clarity — exactly what every Spelling Bee solver strives for.
The Hive Setup
Center Letter: N
Outer Letters: D, U, E, X, P, O
At first glance, this hive felt limiting. With X and P, it looked like a challenge. But those same letters hinted that longer, more refined words might be possible.
The letter set immediately reminded me of words with the ex- prefix — expand, expose, expound. But since we didn’t have A or S, expand and expose were ruled out. Still, I suspected ex- would play a crucial role in today’s pangram.
How I Solved It
1. Starting Small
I began with the simplest combinations: done, node, pond, open, undone, and end. These short words helped me test which consonants paired naturally.
P and O worked well with N, forming pond and open — both solid early finds that gave me momentum.
2. Spotting the Prefix
Then it struck me — ex- was available, along with p, o, u, n, d.
I pieced them together: ex-pound. It looked odd at first, but then it clicked — EXPOUND!
EXPOUND means to explain something in detail.
EXPOUNDED, the extended form, fit perfectly as the second pangram.
They weren’t just valid — they were elegant.
3. Double Pangram Delight
It’s not every day that you find a puzzle with a root word and its extended form both qualifying as pangrams. EXPOUND and EXPOUNDED felt deeply connected — a perfect pair.
The rest of the solving process became smooth sailing once those were in place.
 Today’s Pangrams
 	-
EXPOUND — To explain or present an idea in detail.
Example: “The professor expounded on the importance of critical thinking.”

 	-
EXPOUNDED — Past tense of expound; to have explained or clarified something thoroughly.
Example: “She expounded her views clearly during the meeting.”

These two words are both meaningful and beautifully constructed, using every letter in the hive efficiently.

Solving Strategy Insights
Here’s what made today’s solve work:
 	-
Trust the prefix.
The ex- pattern was a huge clue — most pangrams with X start that way.

 	-
Follow through with logic.
Once ex- and pound connected, the structure became clear.

 	-
Test derivatives.
If you find one word that feels like a base (e.g., expound), always test its forms — expounded, expounding, etc. Sometimes, both are valid pangrams!

Reflection
Today’s puzzle was elegant and deeply satisfying. It wasn’t about filling space with random words — it was about reasoning and flow.
The progression from small finds like pond and open to the complex, intellectual EXPOUND felt natural and fulfilling.
Puzzles like this remind me why Spelling Bee is so addictive: it challenges not just vocabulary, but logic, intuition, and linguistic curiosity.
