Welcome back to another delightful edition of the NYT Spelling Bee breakdown! Today’s hive was buzzing with potential, but it definitely made us work for that Genius badge. With O at the center and letters A, G, L, N, P, Y, and Y, it was a puzzle full of twists, loops, and one sneaky pangram hiding in plain sight.
How I Cracked Today’s Pangram
As always, my first step was scanning for letter combinations that might yield longer words. The presence of Y, L, and N made me immediately think of the suffix “-ology” — but unfortunately, that wasn’t quite viable with this set.
Next, I looked for useful word stems. “Pol-“, “Pan-“, “Play-“, and “Log-“ all looked promising. Combining those with O (our mandatory center letter), I tested variations in my mind and quickly found polygon. Bingo! That was the pangram — it uses all seven letters and checks all the boxes. It also has that satisfying aha moment when everything clicks.

Solving Tips That Helped
-
Always begin with short roots: In this case, “pol”, “gon”, and “log” offered great starts.
-
Try endings like –y, –al, –ly, –on: These helped stretch words like “pool” into “pools” or “goop” into “goopy”.
-
Say the words aloud: Spelling Bee is as much about sound as it is about structure. “Polygon” popped out when I heard the rhythm in my head.
-
Write letter chains physically or mentally: I kept looping through “pl”, “po”, “lo”, “go”, and that helped create new leads.
Puzzle Difficulty
I’d rank today’s puzzle as moderate to challenging. There weren’t as many common words compared to other days, and it was easy to overlook polygon since it feels technical or academic. Still, once you spotted it, it unlocked a fun path to Genius level.
Word of the Day
Polygon – A 2D shape with straight sides. Simple, geometric, but perfectly appropriate for today’s puzzle. It’s a reminder that even classroom vocabulary can make it to Spelling Bee stardom.
After the Buzz
Today’s puzzle proves that patience pays off. With a tricky set of letters and an uncommon pangram, “polygon” was a gem waiting to be uncovered. What made this puzzle enjoyable was the balance between playful words like “goopy” and technical ones like “polygon.” It’s a blend that rewards both creativity and curiosity — two essentials for every Spelling Bee solver. Buzz on, and may tomorrow’s hive be even sweeter!
