Today’s NYT Spelling Bee challenge had me scratching my head at first. With N as the required center letter and outer letters T, O, A, I, F, X, the puzzle felt oddly restrictive. But as I played with combinations and rotated the hive, patterns began to emerge — and one word eventually connected them all: FIXATION.
Below is how I solved today’s puzzle, step by step, and all the words I uncovered along the way.
Today’s Hive Letters
-
Center Letter (required): N
-
Other Letters: T, O, A, I, F, X
First Impressions
The first thing I noticed was the lack of some common consonants — no R, L, or E, which are often helpful for forming longer words. But we did have X, which is unusual and powerful in the right places.
Starting small, I tested 4-letter combinations using N in the middle or as a connector:
-
Font
-
Faint
-
Into
-
Anti
Getting early wins like these is a great way to build confidence — and rack up points.

The Pangram: FIXATION
The real turning point came when I combined FIX (a short but valid word) with ATION — a common suffix. I typed out FIXATION, fully expecting it to be rejected — but to my surprise, it was accepted and lit up as the day’s pangram!
It was a rewarding moment, especially considering how challenging the grid felt at the beginning.
Words I Found Today
Here’s a list of all valid words I uncovered (4 letters or more, using N as the center letter):
-
font
-
faint
-
into
-
anti
-
info
-
naif
-
nox
-
nota
-
foot
-
anno
-
axon
-
toxin
-
fixation (pangram)
-
axion
-
nation
-
finito
-
nonfat
-
tannin
-
anno
Some were surprisingly obscure, like naif (meaning naive or innocent), and others, like nonfat, were right in plain sight — if only you rearranged the letters just right.
Tips That Helped Me
-
Rotate the hive: Visually rearranging the letters helps spark new ideas.
-
Start with known prefixes/suffixes: Words like anti, tion, and fix unlocked longer options.
-
Prioritize unusual letters: With X and F in the mix, I focused on words that could use them meaningfully (e.g., fix, fax, axon).
-
Look for noun roots: Words ending in -ion or -ation often lead to pangrams — like fixation.
Puzzle Takeaway
What looked like a simple set of letters turned out to be a test of lateral thinking. The puzzle forced me to slow down, get creative, and test words that weren’t immediately obvious. Once I spotted fixation, it was like flipping on a light switch — suddenly many more words appeared.
Today’s challenge was a great reminder that the Spelling Bee is as much about intuition and persistence as it is about vocabulary. Whether you reached Genius level or are just happy to have found the pangram, the joy is in the process.
Pangram of the Day: FIXATION
-
Required letter: N
-
Letters used: F, I, X, A, T, I, O, N
-
Meaning: The act of becoming obsessed or intensely focused on something.
