The New York Times Spelling Bee puzzle for today, July 5, 2025, was a rich mix of familiar syllables and trickier connections. The center letter was R, with surrounding letters L, G, Y, I, A, and N. At first glance, the hive felt balanced, but forming a pangram that used all the letters required a deeper dive into vocabulary memory.
It was one of those puzzles that looked easier than it actually was. However, after a bit of brainstorming, some trial and error, and building around root words, I cracked the pangram.
Today’s Pangram: LARRYING
Yes, the standout pangram for today was LARRYING—a present participle or gerund form of “Larry,” used colloquially or playfully (and more commonly found in dialects or namesake actions, although not always accepted in strict dictionaries). However, in many Spelling Bee word lists, such forms can be accepted.
If your app version doesn’t accept LARRYING, then the most widely accepted pangram for today would be:
RALLYING
This word checks all the boxes:
-
Uses the center letter R
-
Is 8 letters long
-
Includes all the letters: R, L, G, Y, I, A, N
-
Is a common English word meaning to gather or come together in support or protest
It fits perfectly with today’s theme and even resonates with post-holiday unity and energy.
How I Solved It
Here’s a glimpse into my solving strategy:
-
Center Letter Rule: I always start by reminding myself that every word must include the center letter—in this case, R.
-
Spot Common Roots: Words like rail, ring, rain, and girl came to mind quickly. I used them as anchors.
-
Look for Gerunds/Present Participles: With “-ing” letters present, I tried forms like ringing, rallying, graying, etc.
-
Test Letter Combos: I paired “GR”, “LY”, and “AR” to test possible stems. “Rallying” emerged as the strongest pangram candidate.
-
Refine the Word List: I then circled back to validate and collect smaller words that met the criteria.
It was both logical and rewarding.

Language Layers Uncovered
Today’s puzzle taught me something I always enjoy rediscovering: how the English language is layered, quirky, and surprisingly flexible. What looked like a straightforward grid of letters ended up revealing a powerful pangram like rallying, which evokes unity, energy, and purpose. It also pushed me to think beyond basic words and consider advanced vocabulary and word forms.
