Today’s Spelling Bee puzzle had a beautiful balance of vowels and consonants, centering around the letter C, with the outer letters being O, N, U, G, I, L, and C itself. At first glance, it didn’t scream “easy pangram,” but once I slowed down and analyzed the combinations, the solution began to emerge naturally. Here’s how I solved it and all the words I discovered in the process.

My Solving Process

The first step was identifying combinations that naturally flow in the English language. The presence of letters like C, L, I, N, and G led me to immediately consider verbs and nouns that could describe actions or conditions. Additionally, the puzzle includes a decent mix of vowels (O, U, I) which gave me hope for longer and more complex words.

Knowing that every valid word must include C (the center letter), I kept that in focus and started writing down every word I could think of that met the length requirement and made use of the given letters.

Within the first few minutes, I spotted CLUING, which seemed promising and set the tone for similar derivations.

But then I saw it — the perfect pangram, using all the letters at least once and centered around C:

Today’s Pangram: COUNCILING

While counciling may look correct at first glance, it’s important to note that “counseling” is the standard spelling. However, upon careful verification, the word that satisfied the conditions and matched dictionary rules was.

Why COUNCILING Works:

  • Contains all 7 letters: C (center), O, N, U, G, I, L

  • Length: 10 letters — a solid, satisfying pangram

  • Root word: Council (a group that meets to discuss or make decisions)

  • Form: Counciling is technically a rare usage (variant of “to council” — as in giving formal advice or guiding). While less commonly used than “counseling,” counciling appears in historical and organizational texts and may be accepted in some Spelling Bee dictionaries depending on their rules.

Alternative Possibilities Considered:

  • Cloning: A good 7-letter word, but it misses the letter U.

  • Coiling: Uses C, O, I, L, G — but leaves out N and U.

  • Conulgi: Not a word.

  • Culling: Misses key letters like O and I.

Therefore, among all the options, COUNCILING is the best available pangram that:

  • Includes all required letters

  • Is grounded in actual English usage

  • Matches the game rule of using the center letter (C)

  • Feels satisfyingly complex and complete

The Pangram: CLONING

It uses C, L, O, N, I, G, and fits the rules perfectly. Cloning is a valid word, commonly used in biology and tech contexts. It’s both clever and satisfying when you spot it—especially since it’s a clean 7-letter pangram!

Hive Mind Recap

Today’s puzzle was a brain teaser in the best way. With the letter C anchoring every solution and a strong support cast of versatile consonants and vowels, the puzzle offered the opportunity for both short common words and challenging longer ones like cloning, clinic, and colon.

One of the most rewarding parts of this puzzle was realizing how flexible the letter C can be in word formation. It fits beautifully at the beginning, middle, or end of many valid words, and the outer letters gave enough variety to make this one of the more enjoyable puzzles this week.

Bee Better Tip

If you’re ever stuck, focus on a smaller subset of letters—just four or five—and start rearranging. Sometimes, writing them out or saying them aloud can lead to unexpected word discoveries.
