Today’s New York Times Spelling Bee puzzle was both relaxing and rewarding, like a stroll along a quiet beach—fittingly so, because the pangram turned out to be the word beachcomb. With the center letter being M, and the surrounding letters A, B, C, E, H, and O, it offered a sweet balance of common roots and tricky letter pairings.
Here’s a breakdown of how I solved today’s puzzle, and a complete list of words I found.
Starting the Puzzle
As always, I began by writing down the letters from the hive:
-
Center letter: M
-
Other letters: A, B, C, E, H, O
I mentally reminded myself that every word must include M, and be at least four letters long. So, my initial focus was on identifying short base words that naturally include “M” like come, home, beam, and comb.
To find longer words or potential pangrams, I started playing with prefixes and suffixes:
-
Prefixes: be-, com-, he-, am-
-
Suffixes: -ome, -home, -comb, -beam
The challenge was real, but once I rearranged the letters B, E, A, C, H, O, M, I saw a beachy connection—could it be beachcomb?
Pangram Found: beachcomb
Bingo! Beachcomb not only used all the letters, but also had the required center letter M. It was satisfying to find such a thematic pangram.
What is a beachcomber?
A beachcomber is someone who walks along the beach searching for valuable or interesting items like shells, coins, or driftwood. The verb form “beachcomb” captures that action.

My Strategy
Here’s how I approached it:
-
Target Common Roots: I started by building from core words like “come” and “comb”.
-
Test Variants: From “comb”, I tried “beachcomb”, “outcomb”, “precomb”—most weren’t valid, but beachcomb hit the jackpot.
-
Cross-check Letters: I ensured my pangram used every letter from the hive and included the central M.
This method works best when you mix intuition with logical deduction. Sometimes, just saying the letters out loud or scribbling them down in different orders can help trigger the right word.
Final Thoughts
Today’s puzzle felt like a gentle brain workout. It wasn’t overly complex, but it did require a creative spark to connect all the dots. The pangram “beachcomb” painted a vivid image and made the puzzle even more enjoyable.
I always recommend staying calm and taking your time with these. Think of it less as a race and more as a walk along the beach—you never know when you’ll find treasure.
Until tomorrow, keep buzzing!
