Today’s New York Times Spelling Bee puzzle was a chewy one—literally! With H as the central letter and a mix of tricky consonants and vowels around it (W, I, N, C, G, E), this puzzle pushed me to think creatively and phonetically. But after a few rounds of wordplay and deduction, I arrived at the perfect pangram that tied it all together: chewing.

Here’s how I solved today’s puzzle and the complete list of valid words I discovered.

Step-by-Step Solving Approach

As always, I started by identifying the central letter: H. That meant every word must contain H, no exceptions.

Next, I listed out the remaining letters around the hive:

  • W, E, I, N, C, G

I started with short, easy words that I knew had H in them:

  • chin, chew, hinge, inch, etc.

Then I looked for clusters and common endings:

  • “-ing”, “-ine”, “-hew”, “-ech”, “-chic”

After about 15 minutes, I felt stuck at the usual 25–30 words and hadn’t found the pangram yet. So I changed tactics and tried to form longer words using all the letters at least once. That’s when I looked at CHEWING.

I immediately tested it:

– Uses H – yes
– Uses W, E, I, N, C, G – yes
– Real word – yes
– 8 letters – satisfying!

Pangram for July 16, 2025: CHEWING

Definition:

“Chewing” refers to the act of grinding or masticating food with your teeth before swallowing.

It’s a common word and easy to overlook because of its simplicity—but it perfectly meets all the puzzle’s criteria. That made it the ideal pangram.

Tips That Helped Me Today

  1. Focus on the Center Letter: Since every word must include “H,” it helps to start with 3-letter or 4-letter stems like “che-”, “hi-”, “he-” and extend from there.

  2. Scan for “-ing” words: In puzzles like this, “-ing” and “-ine” endings are goldmines for longer words.

  3. Say It Out Loud: Saying combinations out loud helps you catch common-sounding phrases that your brain might skip over visually.

  4. Try Common Verbs and Nouns: Words like “chew”, “winch”, “hinge” are functional and often included.

Final Thoughts

Today’s puzzle was a reminder that even everyday actions like chewing can turn into a vocabulary-building exercise. The letter H often adds a twist to familiar root words, and the limited vowel options today made it even more satisfying when I finally hit Genius.

Sometimes the answer is hiding in plain sight—right under your tongue.

Until next time, happy spelling and stay sharp!
