How I Solved NYT Spelling Bee – 23 August 2025

Today’s New York Times Spelling Bee puzzle (August 23, 2025) gave us V as the center letter, with the outer letters D, H, E, N, G, I. At first glance, it felt like a constrained set—plenty of consonants, only two main vowels (E and I), and the tricky V right in the middle.

But after working through the short words and testing different endings, the day’s pangram emerged: INVEIGHED.

How I Found the Pangram

  1. Begin with short words – To get warmed up, I picked off easy finds like vine, give, dive, and hide. These smaller words always act like stepping stones toward bigger discoveries.

  2. Leverage “-ing” endings – With N, G, and I all present, it was natural to try diving and hiving. This started opening the door to longer constructions.

  3. Spot the “-ed” form – Adding -ed often helps extend words in Spelling Bee. Words like vined and hived came up, which reminded me to explore more unusual past-tense structures.

  4. Think beyond the obvious – The breakthrough happened when I thought of “inveigh” (to speak or write with hostility or criticism). Adding -ed turned it into inveighed—a sophisticated and rarely used word, but one that fits perfectly as the pangram.

It was a rewarding find because it’s not a word that comes up in daily conversation, but it’s a beautiful example of the richness of English vocabulary.

Reflections on the Puzzle

What made this puzzle engaging was the rarity of the pangram. Unlike everyday pangrams such as confirm or vending, today’s inveighed tested both spelling intuition and vocabulary knowledge. It’s a reminder that the Spelling Bee often dips into less common but completely valid English words.

The challenge was amplified by the letter set—without A or O, word variety was limited. But this constraint encouraged creativity, particularly around suffixes like -ing and -ed, which unlocked many of the day’s playable words.

Did You Spot the Pangram?

The pangram “inveighed” gave today’s puzzle a distinct flavor. It’s a powerful word, meaning to speak with forceful hostility or criticism, and it felt fitting as the “crown jewel” of the day’s solutions.

With around 25–30 possible words, today’s puzzle leaned on the harder side, but it was a rewarding one for players willing to stretch their vocabulary.

Did you know the word inveighed before today, or was it a brand-new discovery for you? For me, finding it was a great reminder of how the Spelling Bee teaches while it entertains.

Pro Tip: When the Bee feels restrictive, lean on verb forms with -ing and -ed endings. They often lead straight to hidden pangrams, just like today.
