The July 9th Spelling Bee puzzle was a fun mental workout with just the right balance of challenge and creativity. Today’s hive placed the letter T in the center, surrounded by E, A, N, D, G, V, giving us a strong mix of vowels and consonants to play with.
Let’s break down the puzzle, how I tackled it, and the pangram that tied everything together.
Puzzle Layout
-
Center Letter: T (must be included in every word)
-
Other Letters: E, A, N, D, G, V
At first glance, the hive looked promising. The presence of E, A, and N opened up many possibilities. However, letters like V and G suggested there might be a trickier or more unusual pangram hidden in the mix.
My Solving Process
1. Start Small
I began by scanning for obvious 4-letter words:
-
gate
-
vent
-
dent
-
tend
-
gave
These gave me a rhythm and helped build confidence.
2. Identify Common Patterns
I noticed that many of the available letters worked well with -ted, -ant, and -ing style endings. I also started looking at root words like:
-
gate
-
vent
-
dent
And tried expanding them: -
gated
-
vented
-
dented
3. Rearranging for the Pangram
The goal is always to find the pangram—a word that uses all seven letters at least once and includes the center letter. With T being central, I explored every possible mix. Eventually, the word clicked:
Today’s Pangram: VANTAGED
Vantaged is the past participle of vantage, meaning to provide an advantage or benefit. While it’s not a commonly used word, it is perfectly valid and uses all the given letters: V, A, N, T, A, G, E, D. It’s the kind of word that makes you pause, look it up, and then go “Aha!”

What Made Today’s Puzzle Unique
The inclusion of letters like V and G alongside more common vowels added just enough difficulty to keep things exciting. At first, the pangram wasn’t obvious. Many players likely got stuck on common combinations and missed the elegant solution that vantaged offered.
This puzzle also reminded me of the importance of exploring less-used verbs and adjectives. Words like vantage might not be everyday vocabulary, but they’re incredibly satisfying to discover in a puzzle like this.
What We Can Learn from “Vantaged”
“Vantaged” teaches us that unusual words often hold the key to cracking the pangram. The NYT Spelling Bee isn’t just a vocabulary test—it’s a lesson in curiosity. It pushes you to explore beyond the familiar and embrace new and unusual words. Today’s game was a perfect example of that.
Until Tomorrow…
If you found “vantaged” today, give yourself a pat on the back—it wasn’t an easy one! Whether you reached Genius level or are still buzzing through the word list, the real reward is how much fun this daily puzzle brings.
Come back tomorrow for a fresh new hive and another chance to challenge your word skills. Happy spelling!
